3/5/2008 Living PerfectlyMy health habits weren't horrible, but they weren't great.either. No sodas, fast food, or cigarettes, and I ate rice instead of wheat...but I also liked cheese cake, chocolate. heavy cream, and fortifying spoonfuls of ice cream when afternoon hunger hit. If I was stuck on what to have for dinner, the solution invariably included Xinjiang food. I was too fond of my night snack. I've quitted a gym membership over a year, and I never stretched. I wore sunscreen...scarcely, I usually forgot to floss. Etc.
I'd always gotten by. Mostly because of dumb genetic luck, I'm thin.(I know, you hate me already). But I couldn't deny seeing some changes since I've got my job: less energy, a growing pot belly, pain in my neck and my head whenever I didn't sleep well or busy day. Especially, after a night shift duty, I felt exhausted and looked like a ghost. Paracetamol was my best friend. Living with my parents offered a none-too-gentle reminder that this was just beginning.
But could it be slowed if I were very, very good? If I really really cleaned up my act? What if for a month, I embraced every health dictate we all know we should follow but blithely ignore?
With the help of internet and my books, I made a plan for perfect living. I'd follow the Chinese Nutrition Society Guidlines for diet: 2300kcal per day, and no more than 30% fat, and no more than 2200 mg of sodium, and more vegetables and fruits and blah, blah, blah. I'll also have a minimum of 30 minutes exercise at "moderate intensity" most days of the week. Afterward I'd stretch my major muscle groups.
At some point during the day, I will also do more personal exercise. I will sit and stand up straight, I will drink 1.5 liter of water per day, take multivitamin and calcium supplement to make sure I get the recommended elements and vitamin. I will get seven hours of shut-eye a night except on duty, try to ignore all the cosmetic advertisements, and use my own compounding, cause I am a pharmacist. And I would never, ever, ever venture out of the house without slathering on UVA/UVB sunscrenn 30 minutes prior to exposure.
Sound uplifting? Let's make it work! |
